Industrial Training
Semester 8 involves full-time industrial training which provides the students a job training experience at sites owned by tri forces, private and state sectors. The performance of students during this phase is monitored and individually assessed based on their training report, daily diary maintained by them and a viva voce. The performance of students during this phase is assessed and carries 6 non-GPA credits.
Field Visit
The students receive the opportunity to visit prime locations of Surveying Science activities such as sites maintained by tri-services, private and state sectors. The students visit and practically engage in work at these locations. This gives exposure to the students on how the industry functions and also gives them an understanding of what to expect once they start as active duty in their future employment. Some of the locations that are enlisted to visit during the degree program to give the students exposure in the industry are as follows,
- Institute of Surveying and Mapping, Diyathalawa.
- Triangulation Point at Piduruthalagala.
- Surveying Department of Sri Lanka, Colombo.
- Victoria Power Station, Adhikarigama.
BSc (Hons) in Geoinformatics Degree Programme
The BSc (Hons) in Geoinformatics program at the Department of Spatial Sciences, FBESS, KDU Southern Campus, is strategically developed to address the growing demand for geospatial professionals in Sri Lanka. Studies have highlighted a critical need for degree-level trained personnel in geoinformatics fields such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and spatial data analysis. For instance, a survey conducted among industry stakeholders, including government agencies, private firms, and NGOs, identified a skills gap in applying advanced geospatial techniques to sectors such as urban planning, agriculture, disaster management, and environmental monitoring. By addressing these workforce needs, the program contributes to regional and national economic progress.
