Sinharaja Forest Reserve
The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity
hotspot located in the southwestern part of Sri Lanka. Covering approximately 8,864
hectares, it is one of the country’s last remaining areas of primary tropical rainforest.
The name “Sinharaja” translates to “Lion King,” symbolizing its majestic and pristine
nature.
Renowned for its rich biodiversity, the forest is home to numerous endemic flora and
fauna, including rare trees, birds, mammals, and reptiles. It plays a vital role in pre-
serving the ecological balance and serves as a key watershed area for Sri Lanka.
The Sinharaja Forest is also a popular destination for eco-tourism, offering opportuni-
ties for birdwatching, hiking, and experiencing Sri Lanka’s lush natural heritage.
