Recognizing the knowledge vacuum in the application of quality practices to the operations of
both manufacturing and service sector organizations, as well as the need for tailored management
practices in the manufacturing and real estate industries in Sri Lanka, General Sir John Kotelawala
Defence University took the commendable initiative to address this gap. Consequently, the
university established the Department of Industrial Quality Management under the Faculty of
Built Environment and Spatial Sciences to bridge this knowledge vacuum in 2022.

With the establishment of the department, the B.Sc. (Hons) in Industrial and Service Quality
Management degree program was introduced, with its first intake recruiting in 2023. This program
is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure high standards of
quality and efficiency in both industrial and service-oriented organizations. Graduates of the B.Sc.
(Hons) in Industrial and Service Quality Management will have acquired an advanced education
that encompasses both specialized knowledge and general intellectual and life skills. This
comprehensive preparation enables them to pursue successful careers in quality management in
both manufacturing and service sector organizations.

CHANCELLOR Subsequently, the department initiated its Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Property and Investment

General SHS Kottegoda (Retd) WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc Management program, with the inaugural intake commencing in 2024. This undergraduate
degree program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the real
estate and investment industries. It integrates principles from property management, investment
analysis, finance, and business management to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills
essential for success in the dynamic fields of property and investment. Graduates of the B.Sc.
(Hons) in Property and Investment Management will be empowered with the expertise necessary
to assume strategic leadership roles in the property, real estate, and investment management
sectors, thereby enabling them to secure competitive job opportunities both nationally and
              internationally.

Both degree programs offered by the department have been designed to align with Level 6 of the
Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF-2015), each comprising 120 credits. The curriculum for
each program contains contemporary subject areas in industrial management techniques, thereby
offering undergraduates enhanced opportunities for practical industrial engagement. Beyond
traditional teaching and learning methodologies, both programs incorporate opportunities
for self-directed and experiential learning. These include regular industrial visits with industry
experts, case studies to assess students’ ability to apply knowledge, frequent guest lectures, and
